This creamy, crunchy sweet potato casserole with a buttery pecan streusel topping is the perfect balance of sweet and savory. It’s a budget-friendly, make-ahead side dish that even picky eaters love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes (about 4–5 medium)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Wash sweet potatoes, pierce with a fork, and roast on a baking sheet for 45-60 minutes until tender. Let cool 10 minutes.
  2. Peel sweet potatoes and transfer flesh to a large bowl. Add melted butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, beaten eggs, vanilla, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Beat with a hand mixer on medium speed until smooth and creamy (2-3 minutes).
  3. In a medium bowl, combine chopped pecans, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add cold cubed butter and cut in with a pastry cutter or two forks until mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized butter pieces.
  4. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Spread sweet potato filling evenly in the dish. Sprinkle pecan streusel evenly over the top without pressing down.
  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes until filling is set and topping is golden brown. Let cool at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, toast pecans in a dry skillet for 3-4 minutes before chopping. Use cold butter for the streusel to ensure a crunchy topping. Let casserole rest 10-15 minutes before serving to allow filling to set. To make ahead, assemble without baking, cover, and refrigerate up to 24 hours; add 10 minutes to baking time.
