A rich and nutty twist on classic sweet potato casserole, featuring brown butter and a crunchy pecan streusel topping instead of marshmallows. Perfect for fall gatherings or a cozy night in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes (about 4–5 medium), peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Place sweet potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water by 1 inch, add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain and let steam dry.
  3. In a light-colored skillet over medium heat, melt 1/2 cup butter, stirring constantly until it turns golden amber with a nutty aroma (5-7 minutes). Remove from heat and pour into a heatproof bowl.
  4. Mash sweet potatoes in a large bowl until smooth (leave a few chunks if desired).
  5. Add browned butter, 1/3 cup brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, salt, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and milk to the mashed sweet potatoes. Whisk until smooth.
  6. Pour filling into prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  7. In a medium bowl, combine flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, pecans, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Cut in cold cubed butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  8. Sprinkle topping evenly over filling. Do not press down.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes until filling is set and topping is golden brown. If topping browns too quickly, tent with foil for last 10 minutes.
  10. Let cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature eggs and toast pecans lightly before chopping. To make ahead, prepare filling and topping separately up to 2 days in advance; assemble and bake with 5-10 extra minutes. For a gluten-free option, use almond flour in the topping.
