Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups (64 ounces) whole milk
  • 2 cups (16 ounces) heavy cream
  • 2 cups (about 12 ounces) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups mini marshmallows (for topping)
  • 1 can or homemade whipped cream (for topping)
  • 1 cup crushed graham crackers or Oreos (for topping)
  • 1 cup candy corn (for topping)
  • 1 cup candy pumpkins (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate shavings or sprinkles (for topping)
  • Caramel sauce or chocolate syrup, for drizzling (for topping)
  • Cinnamon sticks or candy canes, for stirring (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Prep your crockpot: Rinse and dry the insert. Set it to LOW.
  2. Add the milk and cream: Pour in 8 cups whole milk and 2 cups heavy cream. Stir to combine.
  3. Add the dry ingredients: Whisk in 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt until no lumps remain.
  4. Add the chocolate chips: Pour in 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips and stir.
  5. Cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours, stirring every 30 minutes, until steaming hot, chocolate chips are melted, and mixture is smooth and glossy.
  6. Stir in the vanilla: About 10 minutes before serving, add 2 teaspoons vanilla extract and stir well.
  7. Switch to WARM setting: Once hot and smooth, turn crockpot to WARM to keep at perfect drinking temperature for hours. If too thick, stir in a splash of milk.
  8. Set up your topping bar: Arrange marshmallows, whipped cream, crushed cookies, candy corn, sprinkles, and sauces in small bowls near the crockpot.
  9. Serve and enjoy: Ladle hot chocolate into mugs and let guests customize their drink.

Notes

Don’t rush the heating process; low and slow prevents scorching. Whisk cocoa powder gradually to avoid lumps. Keep extra milk nearby to thin if needed. Taste and adjust sweetness after the first hour. Label toppings for guest convenience. For a spiked adult version, set out peppermint schnapps, Baileys, or bourbon. For dairy-free, use full-fat oat milk and coconut cream. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for 3 months.
