Easy Patriotic Rice Krispie Treats - featured image

These no-bake, festive rice krispie treats feature red, white, and blue layers with a perfect balance of buttery marshmallow and crisp cereal, ideal for 4th of July celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal (150 g)
  • 10 oz mini marshmallows (280 g)
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter (42 g), softened
  • Red food coloring
  • Blue food coloring
  • Fresh strawberries (optional, sliced)
  • Fresh blueberries (optional)
  • Patriotic sprinkles (red, white, and blue)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter, stirring occasionally for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add 10 oz of mini marshmallows to the melted butter and stir continuously until fully melted and smooth, about 4-5 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and quickly divide the melted marshmallow mixture into three small bowls. Add a few drops of red food coloring to one, blue to another, and leave one plain for white. Stir gently to combine.
  5. In three separate large bowls, place 2 cups of Rice Krispies cereal each. Pour each colored marshmallow mixture over its bowl and fold gently with a spatula until cereal is fully coated.
  6. Press the red mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan using a buttered spatula or wax paper. Layer the white mixture gently over the red, then finish with the blue layer on top.
  7. Sprinkle patriotic sprinkles on the blue layer while still warm.
  8. Let the treats cool at room temperature for at least 1 hour to firm up, or refrigerate for 20-30 minutes to speed up setting.
  9. Use a sharp knife to cut into squares or fun shapes. If the knife sticks, lightly grease it or warm it under hot water before slicing.

Notes

Use fresh marshmallows for best melt and texture. Butter your spatula and pan to prevent sticking. Let treats cool fully for clean cuts and chewy-crisp texture. You can substitute gluten-free cereal and vegan butter/marshmallows to make it gluten-free or vegan. Natural food colorings like beet or blueberry juice can be used as alternatives.
