These witch finger pretzel rods are a fun, simple, and slightly creepy Halloween treat that comes together in under an hour. Made with pretzel rods, green-tinted white chocolate, and almond fingernails, they’re perfect for making with kids and guaranteed to be a hit at any Halloween party.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 24 pretzel rods (standard size, not extra-thick)
  • 16 ounces vanilla candy coating or almond bark (e.g., CandiQuik or Ghirardelli white melting wafers)
  • Green gel food coloring (e.g., Americolor or Wilton; 6-8 drops, or to desired color)
  • 24 whole almonds (raw, unroasted)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening (optional, for thinning chocolate)
  • Red icing gel or red decorating gel (for ‘blood’ drips)
  • Pretzel crumbs or crushed graham crackers (optional, for ‘dirt’ effect)
  • Edible glitter or luster dust (optional, for shimmer)

Instructions

  1. Prep your workspace: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Have pretzel rods, almonds, and decorations ready.
  2. Melt the candy coating: Place vanilla candy coating or almond bark in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, then stir. Repeat in 15-second intervals, stirring after each, until smooth (about 1-2 minutes total). Add 1 tablespoon coconut oil if desired for thinner consistency.
  3. Add green color: Stir in 6-8 drops of green gel food coloring until vibrant green. Add more drops one at a time if needed.
  4. Dip the pretzel rods: Hold a pretzel rod by one end and dip into green chocolate, leaving 1-2 inches undipped at the top (the ‘stump’). Twist to coat evenly. Let excess drip back into bowl.
  5. Place on parchment: Set dipped pretzel on parchment-lined baking sheet. Gently press a whole almond onto the tip, pointed outward and slightly angled, to create a fingernail. Repeat with remaining pretzels.
  6. Create knuckles: While chocolate is still wet, use a small knife or toothpick to make 2-3 horizontal lines across the pretzel rod to mimic knuckles. Press lightly to create indents.
  7. Add ‘blood’ details: Squeeze small drops of red icing gel near the almond ‘fingernail’ and let drip naturally. Add a drop at the ‘stump’ end for a severed look. Don’t overdo it.
  8. Let them set: Allow witch fingers to set completely at room temperature for 20-30 minutes. For faster setting, refrigerate for 10 minutes, then let come to room temperature before serving to prevent condensation.
  9. Optional dirt effect: Crush extra pretzels into fine crumbs and sprinkle on parchment around witch fingers for a spooky presentation.

Notes

Keep chocolate warm but not hot; reheat in 10-second bursts if it thickens. Work in batches of 6 to keep chocolate wet for details. Use room-temperature almonds to prevent chocolate from seizing. For nut-free version, use green candy melts or mint patties for fingernails. Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week; do not refrigerate. Freeze for up to 3 months.
