An easy, customizable All-American burger bar setup perfect for party hosting, featuring juicy patties, fresh toppings, and classic condiments for a crowd-pleasing experience.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness) – about 1/3 lb (150 g) per patty
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Optional: garlic powder or onion powder
  • Soft hamburger buns (sesame seed, brioche, or potato buns)
  • Butter for toasting (unsalted, softened)
  • Cheddar slices
  • American cheese slices
  • Swiss cheese slices
  • Iceberg or romaine lettuce leaves (washed and dried)
  • Ripe tomatoes, sliced (beefsteak or heirloom preferred)
  • Red onions, thinly sliced
  • Pickles (dill or bread-and-butter), sliced
  • Ketchup
  • Yellow mustard
  • Mayonnaise (regular or flavored)
  • BBQ sauce (optional)
  • Bacon strips (cooked until crispy)
  • Avocado slices or guacamole
  • Jalapeños or banana peppers
  • Sauteed mushrooms or caramelized onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties (15 minutes): In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef with salt (1 tsp per pound) and pepper (½ tsp per pound). Mix gently by hand without overworking. Divide into 1/3 lb portions and shape into patties about ¾ inch thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb.
  2. Prep the Toppings (10 minutes): Wash and dry lettuce leaves, slice tomatoes and onions thinly, and arrange pickles and other toppings on serving trays.
  3. Toast the Buns (5 minutes): Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium heat. Spread softened butter on the cut sides of the buns and toast until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side.
  4. Cook the Patties (10-12 minutes): Preheat grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Cook patties about 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness. Add cheese slices during the last minute and cover to melt cheese. Avoid pressing patties while cooking.
  5. Set Up the Burger Bar (5 minutes): Arrange toasted buns, cooked patties, toppings, and condiments buffet-style. Provide plates, napkins, and utensils for guests to build their own burgers.

Notes

Do not overwork the meat to keep patties tender. Make a thumb indentation in patties to prevent puffing. Toast buns just before serving to avoid sogginess. Keep cooked patties warm by tenting with foil. Soak sliced onions in ice water for 10 minutes to mellow flavor if desired. Use a spray bottle to control grill flare-ups.
