Perfect Mummy Hot Dogs: Easy Crescent Roll Recipe

These mummy hot dogs are a fun and easy Halloween treat made with hot dogs wrapped in buttery crescent roll dough, baked until golden, and finished with mustard eyes. Perfect for parties, they come together in under 25 minutes with just four simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 standard-sized hot dogs
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • Yellow mustard (for the eyes)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Unroll the crescent dough onto a cutting board. Press the seams gently to seal them, creating one large rectangle of dough.
  3. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the dough lengthwise into thin strips — aim for about 1/4 inch wide. You should get roughly 8-10 strips per can of dough.
  4. Pat the hot dogs dry with a paper towel. If using extra-long hot dogs, cut them in half crosswise.
  5. Take one strip of dough and wrap it around a hot dog, starting at one end and working your way to the other. Leave a small gap near the top for the ‘face’ — about 1/2 inch of uncovered hot dog. Overlap the dough slightly as you go, but don’t pull it too tight.
  6. Place the wrapped hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each one.
  7. Using a pastry brush, lightly coat each mummy with melted butter.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the dough is golden brown and puffed, and the hot dogs are heated through.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes on the baking sheet. Transfer to a serving platter.
  10. Using a toothpick, dab two small dots of mustard on the exposed hot dog section to create the eyes. Serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, let the crescent dough sit at room temperature for 5 minutes before opening. Don’t over-wrap the hot dogs — 2-3 layers of dough is ideal. If the dough browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil. You can wrap the mummies up to 4 hours in advance and refrigerate; add 2-3 minutes to baking time. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in a 350°F oven for 5-7 minutes.
