Creamy chocolate pudding layered with crushed Oreos and topped with gummy worms peeking out like they’re escaping the soil. A simple, nostalgic, and crowd-pleasing Halloween dessert that comes together in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1 package (14.3 oz) Oreo cookies
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional)
  • 1 bag gummy worms
  • Optional toppings: Halloween sprinkles, candy eyeballs, or pumpkin-shaped candies

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the instant chocolate pudding mix and 2 cups of cold whole milk. Whisk vigorously for about 2 minutes, or until the mixture starts to thicken. Add a tiny pinch of sea salt and whisk once more.
  2. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to an hour, until the pudding is thick and spoonable.
  3. While the pudding sets, crush the Oreos. Place them in a Ziploc bag and seal it tight, then crush them with a rolling pin or the bottom of a heavy pan until you have a mix of fine crumbs and small chunks.
  4. Optional: Stir 2 tablespoons of melted butter into the crushed Oreos for a clumpier texture.
  5. Once the pudding is set, spoon a layer of crushed Oreos into the bottom of each cup (about 2 tablespoons per cup). Add a layer of chocolate pudding (about ¼ cup per cup). Repeat with another layer of Oreos and another layer of pudding. End with a final layer of Oreos on top.
  6. Gently press 3-4 gummy worms into the top layer of each cup, letting some dangle over the edge.
  7. Refrigerate the assembled cups for at least 15 minutes before serving.
  8. Right before serving, add optional decorations like Halloween sprinkles or candy eyeballs.

Notes

Use whole milk for a creamier pudding. Let the pudding set properly before layering to avoid a muddy mess. Crush Oreos to a mix of fine crumbs and small chunks for the best ‘soil’ texture. For a dairy-free version, use oat milk and a vegan pudding mix. For gluten-free, use gluten-free chocolate sandwich cookies. The assembled cups can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, but the texture is best within 24 hours.
